How to keep children aware of current affairs
Kids these days are the least interested in reading and watching the news. All they care about is their video games and cell phones on which they can chat, play games and do nothing more. It does not harm them as children, but it is not good for their future. When they reach adulthood, they lack the ability to read the current events that give birth to a sleeping nation.
It creates pressure on you as a parent because it becomes your responsibility to develop their interest in watching and reading the news. To help you in this task, I have come up with some unique ideas which are discussed below.
Before we go any further, let me tell you that outdoor play is not included and only indoor activities can help you in this task. However, you can do the activities below in an open space such as the shadow of a shadow structure if you wish.
1. Play geo-political games
Games are a fun way to learn. Effective games such as the World Peace Game Challenge to achieve political goals in order to maintain peace in the world. This game makes them aware of what is going on in any country and how the problems will be solved.
2. Use a world map
A world map hung over a hall or room can do more than just decorate. It can serve as a tool to better understand world events. When you hear some news, ask your children to highlight the areas mentioned in the clip. This will help them analyze how far away the country is from where the problem is occurring and help them visualize it geographically.
3. Create your own podcast
Listen to entertaining news while doing chores around the house with your kids. Next, create a podcast about the event you heard with your kids. In doing so, children are looking more at the event they are covering and using their understanding. This helps them develop journalism skills while making them aware of the world.
4. Discuss the news
Have heated discussions about current events and get your whole family involved. For example, you might highlight the “Irma” theme that hit Florida recently. Ask your children about this and ask them what can be done to improve the situation.
If they don’t know about the event already, they will definitely Google it on their mobile phone to save themselves the embarrassment. As a result, some other important news will also catch their eye. This keeps them active in learning what is happening in the world.
5. Tell stories
Speaking generally at home, it’s a good idea to tell some historical stories sometimes. For example, I told my children the story of Princess Diana a few days ago and they asked a lot of related questions. By doing so, I realized that they got to know the British monarchy, which in turn helped them learn about the history, culture, art, and different aspects of British life at the time.
